History
Overview

St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church is located at 17301 Prince Frederick Road in Hughesville, Maryland (Charles County). St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church has been an active and vital part of the community since it was established in 1867. St. John is a member of the Potomac District of the Washington Annual Conference of the 2nd Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The Church was once named “Charles Chapel” and was established in 1867. The historic files of the church record the founding pastor as Reverend Abraham Dent (1867-1870). The land for the church was donated by Mr. Frank Hill in the late 1800’s and Early 1900’s.

In the 1930’s the original building collapsed. The members continued to worship in their homes. In 1940, the members of the Quaker Church donated the wood and windows to assist St. John in the rebuilding phase. Under the leadership of Rev. J.W. Parker, the rebuilding began.  In the 1960’s the church decided to build a fellowship hall.

Originally, St. John was part of a circuit church along with, Ebenezer - Charlotte Hall.  In the 1980’s, under the leadership of Rev. Melvin Booze, St. John was elevated from the circuit to a station.  More recently, the receding pastors include Rev. Harold E. Sims Jr. (appointed March 31, 2019), Rev. Dr. Vanetta L. Brice (appointed April 11, 2014), Rev. Hedy Drummond, Rev. Donald Marbury and Rev. Dr. Constance Wheeler-Evans.  Rev. Latia Suite was appointed to St. John in July 2022 and currently serves as the Pastor.
